He says he can't read...

My youngest son has been telling everyone he can't read. What that means to him is not what many take it to mean. He means that (1) he cannot read the way his older brother does -- he doesn't read books like 'Harry Potter' or 'Percy Jackson' (2) he finds certain fonts harder to read than others (course, so do I!) and (3)... something I just discovered last night -- he has a hard time reading picture books. This last might surprise some people. Most early readers are replete with pictures but for children like my youngest, those pictures are themselves a challenge. Xander is an artist by inclination. Images fascinate him. When he is presented with pictures books, even the simplest prose becomes difficult because of the distraction that the images pose. Last night, however, I challenged him to try to read 'Beware! It's Friday the 13th #13 (Dragon Slayers' Academy)(He loves the series.) There were a couple of words that he struggled with but to his delight he realized he could read. The page, filled with JUST words, was much less distracting than a picture book would've been. The font was large enough and plain enough that he could truly see it. He grew tired after a bit and asked me to read more but he was thoroughly pleased with himself and kept repeating 'I'm learning.. I'm LEARNING!' Smile. Such are the joys of childhood.

  1. That's my beloved Brown Eyed Boy. Further evidence (if I needed it, which I don't) that the cookie cutter curricula of public schools don't work well for all children, because children are not cookies! Each is unique (and everyone who knows 'xander understands that very well.)
